blog image I attended the BIO International Convention in Atlanta, GA May 18-21, 2009 to exhibit within their Patient & Health Advocate Display. The BIO convention drew more than 15,000 medical researchers, patient advocates, biotech and pharmaceutical representatives from all over the globe to discuss the cutting edge in biotechnology. As an exhibitor during this conference AARDA had the opportunity to talk with researchers about the issues facing autoimmune disease patients and bring to the forefront the need for new research and discovery in the field of autoimmunity research and discovery.

At our booth we had the opportunity to talk with other patient advocate organizations to share information and find ways in which we could collaborate to better serve the patients we represented. There were representatives from the National Medical Association promoting minority involvement in therapeutic clinical trials, National Coalition of Autoimmune Patient Groups member NORD or National Organization for Rare Disorders was also in attendance, along with folks from RetireSafe who shared AAR DA’s commitment to healthcare reform and the extraordinary importance of advocating for patient choice of physician and health plan provider within any reform of the healthcare system.

Conferences such as these allow AARDA staff to continue to form alliances, gain up to date information on the latest in research and technology, and most importantly to continue to ensure that researchers and biotech firms all over the world understand autoimmunity from the perspective of the patient suffering with autoimmune diseases.
