Treating Gum Disease Could Improve Symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis

Scientists have found yet another excellent reason to take care of your teeth. Researchers from Case Western Reserve University School of Dental Medicine and University Hospitals of Cleveland reported in the Journal of Periodontology that patients who suffered from both severe rheumatoid arthritis and gum disease showed a reduction in arthritic pain, number of swollen joints and the degree of morning stiffness when doctors eliminated infection and inflammation in the gums. It should be noted that according to one study researcher, Dr. Nabil Bissada, D.D.S., gum disease tends to be prevalent in rheumatoid arthritis patients. Both are inflammatory diseases and share similarities in the progression of the disease over time. According to Dr. Bissada, this news is exciting as it adds a new intervention for physicians in treating rheumatoid arthritis
