New Bill Could Authorize $43 Million for New Autoimmune Disease Research, Awareness, and Education

April 23, Rep. Patrick J. Kennedy (D-RI) re-introduced the Prevention, Awareness, and Research of Autoimmune Diseases (PARAiD) Act of 2009. The legislation would authorize the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to spend up to $43 million dollars on new research, awareness, and education for autoimmune diseases. The legislation would focus on the following five areas:
* Research on Environmental Triggers of Autoimmune Diseases * Grants to Increase Awareness of Autoimmune Diseases * Grants for Education on Relationship Between Autoimmune Diseases and Mental Illness * Loan Repayment Program Regarding Physician Research on Autoimmune Diseases * Research and Database on Biomarkers of Autoimmune Diseases
AARDA will be working with the National Coalition of Autoimmune Patient Groups (NCAPG) as well as autoimmune patients, their families, and friends to launch a national grassroots advocacy campaign to support this effort.
