itemPink (1K) Contacting a Member of Congress

Not all of the members of congress have e-mail, enter your zip code for a complete list of all Senators and Representatives for your state. We have included telephone numbers for all members and e-mail addresses for those members who have one.

A letter (either by e-mail or regular postal mail) is an effective method of communicating your position to a member of congress. If you decide to write a letter, this list of helpful suggestions will improve the effectiveness of the letter:

  1. State your purpose for writing in the first paragraph of the letter. If your letter pertains to a specific piece of legislation, identify it accordingly, e.g., House bill: H. R. ____, Senate bill: S.____.
  2. Be courteous and to the point.
  3. Keep your letter short.
  4. Include examples of how the proposed legislation will affect you or people you know.
  5. Include your return address on all communications (including e-mail). Your Senator or Representative will want to know that the correspondence is from a person in his or her state or district.
  6. Address your letter as follows:
To a Senator:

The Honorable (full name)
__(Rm.)__(name of)Senate Office Building
United States Senate
Washington, DC 20510

Dear Senator:

    To a Representative:

    The Honorable (full name)
    __(Rm.)__(name of)House Office Building
    United States House of Representatives
    Washington, DC 20515
