My husband has been battling a stubborn case of uveitis/ optic vasculitis. He has seen his GP and 3 eye specialists and is not getting any relief. All drs agree that the eye problems are most likely a symptom of an autoimmune disease and not a problem unto itself. My husband had a case of uveitis/ vasculitis 10 yrs ago, which left after a few months of prednisone treatment. Since then, he has had no problems except an incident of blood in his urine and pain in his left side four years ago. Now, the uveitits/ vasculitis is back and is not responding to prednisone. This time, it is combinedwith horrible night sweats, unexplained weight loss and an overall feeling of illness. All "regular" tests are popping up negative. What kind of dr should he pursue a diagnosis with? A rheumatologist? Any thoughts on a possible diagnosis? WE are in the NYC/ NJ area....any dr recommendations would also be greatly appreciated.

By all means get to a rheumatologist right away. Eye involvement and a history of past kidney involvement and vasculitis hints at several serious autoimmune disorders.

Here is a short list of autoimmune disorders that can cause both uveitis and vasculitis
this is far from being a complete list.

    Cogans syndrome
    Wegeners granulomatosis
    Sarcoidosis
    Cryoglobulinemia
    Lupus
    Rheumatoid arthritis

(Wegener's and cryoglobulinemia are notorious for kidney involvement)
