National autoimmune disease education series tour arrives in Greater Boston on June 26. Autoimmune diseases such as lupus, has recently garnered international attention since pop sensation Lady Gaga announced on Larry King last week that she has tested border-line positive for lupus, however has yet to develop the disease. The public forum, titled, “What Every American Needs to Know about Autoimmune Disease,” is taking place Saturday, June 26, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Crown Plaza Boston Newton (320 Washington Street, Newton, MA 02458).
The forum is one of a series of patient forums which the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) has been taking around the country for more than three years now. The forums purpose is to provide essential information on chronic illness coping skills, the latest in research and new therapies for autoimmune diseases, a focus on women and autoimmunity, and information on why it’s important for the general public to know their own family history of autoimmune diseases. The forum is targeted to autoimmune disease patients, their families and friends, as well as the general public. A growing concern worldwide, autoimmune disease affect women 75 percent more often than men, they are rising in the U.S. and around the world, and currently are one of the top 10 killers of women under the age of 65. Included in the 100+ autoimmune diseases are lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, celiac disease, vitiligo, scleroderma, and type 1 diabetes.
Top names in autoimmune disease research, literature, and advocacy will be featured at the forum, such as world renowned autoimmunity expert, Dr. Noel R. Rose, Director of the Center for Autoimmune Disease Research at Johns Hopkins University. Additionally, the program will include award-winning medical journalist and co-author of The Autoimmune Connection, Rita Baron-Faust, as well as Virginia Ladd, President/Executive Director of host organization the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA).
