Biologics have been the first major breakthrough in treatment for many life-altering and life-threatening autoimmune diseases in more than 50 years. AARDA is concerned with the President’s remarks that he would support reducing the 12- year data protection that was included in legislation passed by Congress with widespread bipartisan support as well as support of industry and patient groups. Reducing the 12 years of data protection, as the President has proposed, would seriously jeopardize innovative companies’ ability to fund research on future treatments and cures. If the President’s proposal is successful, the U.S. will then provide less data protection for new, innovative biologics than is currently bestowed in Europe. It is a false economy to penalize investment in innovation and expect to reduce the cost of health care when innovation leads to improving the lives of patients, allowing them to be more productive, and often utilizing fewer health care services.
